I’m pleased to host the second stop on the blog tour for Heart Song, a new fantasy novel by debut author Desiree Williams!
Heart Song is the sweet, inspiring story of Alanna, a girl with magical gifts whose solitary life is forever changed when she unknowingly saves the life of the prince of Aldonnia. Alanna’s rescue of Prince Jerric has unexpected consequences for both of them, forging a bond between the two and setting off a chain of events that will affect not just Alanna and Jerric, but the fates of their war-torn countries as well.
Heart Song is first and foremost a love story, but it’s also a fantasy and a tale about the calling God has for each person. This last element is the one that appealed to me the most. There are plenty of obstacles for Alanna to overcome, such as learning to control her burgeoning gifts and coming to terms with her identity and destiny. No matter what trials she faces, though, Alanna relies on the Lord of Heaven to guide her. She feels scared and weak at times, but her trust in the Lord never falters. It’s her source of strength, and I finished the novel feeling lighter for having witnessed the power of Alanna’s faith and love. I enjoyed watching her grow and was proud of how she progressed from the beginning of the story to the end.
The romantic aspect of the story wasn’t really for me, though it may resonate well with other readers. I’m a bit peculiar in the sense that as much as I enjoy a good love story, I don’t always do well with books that read like romance novels. In other words, if hearts are described as singing, rejoicing, or crying out, or if there are scenes that involve two people gazing lovingly into one another’s eyes, I tend to get a little fidgety. That’s a personal preference, though. There are a host of other readers who adore romance novels, and I feel Williams’ novel will hold a greater appeal for them.
Another challenge I had was that there are quite a few grammatical mistakes. Pronoun/verb agreement issues, misuse of certain words, and problems with tenses distracted me and at times made it difficult to lose myself in the story.
Still, it’s evident that Williams has put a lot of heart into her debut novel (no pun intended, I promise). The result is that Heart Song is a hopeful, uplifting story about the power of love – both romantic and heavenly – to transform your life and your destiny.
A free copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
