Barrett was taken aback, and didn't quite catch on at first. He glanced towards the front row and asked, "Swap seats?"

"Yeah." Alberto swallowed before adding, "I'm allergic to perfume."

What he meant, of course, was that Jacquetta's perfume was too strong and downright unpleasant. She might think that she was being subtle with her intentions, but only an idiot wouldn't suspect her enthusiasm.

Barrett stood up, telling himself that Alberto was their chief sponsor. As much as he would like to stay longer with Rachel, Barrett couldn't afford to let his personal interests win. This was his golden opportunity to ingratiate himself with the Gibson family, and he wasn't about to waste it.

Women always come and go, anyway. But the chances to climb up the social ladder were few and far between.
