Averie had been here for nearly six months.

Six months of a nightmarish existence had shown her the darkest sides of life. From initial hopeful fantasies to a slow slide into disappointment, and ultimately, despair.

She hadn't spotted Shelia. Nor had she spotted an escape route.

Averie stood beneath the wires, gazing at them. Another sparrow flew past. Unlike the one she had seen on her first day here, it hovered on the wires, seemingly cautious about landing.

She muttered to herself, "This sparrow surely wouldn't be as reckless as the last one."
