Pointing to the seat where Michael had been earlier, Rachel inquired, "A friend visited this afternoon and left a pen here. Have you seen it?"

"A pen?" The shop assistant looked puzzled. "No, I haven't seen it. Are you sure it was left here?"

"He mentioned he last saw it here. It's quite important to him. Could you please think over it once more?"

The assistant hesitated, then asked, “Is this friend of yours a man?"
