The last time Joey had called her, Alberto had picked up but hadn't acknowledged Joey.

After a pause, Rachel answered carefully, “Sort of."

Joey's disappointment was palpable. "Daddy forgets me, right?" He recalled the previous call. "Last time I called you, Daddy answered but didn't say anything when he heard my name. Why doesn't he remember me?" His voice trailed off, his small hands twisting anxiously. “Is it because I'm not that important to Daddy?"

“That's not true, Joe," Rachel reassured him quickly, grasping his hand to stop his anxious movements. “It's not what you think."

After Rachel finished speaking, memories of the day Alberto had answered Joey's call and her subsequent worries surfaced.
