Chapter: 197
He perched on the edge of the bed, observing the girl lying with a pallid face. His heart ached. Her face was so pale and lifeless.
Sean touched his chest. Unbeknownst to him, his gaze was filled with sympathy.
Sean pulled up a chair and sat by the bed, extending his hand to brush away strands of Norah's hair from her face and tucking them behind her ears.
Sean started to recall his encounters with Norah. Apart from the radiance Norah exuded at their first meeting, she appeared to be in distress in every other encounter of theirs. She had struggled with a cold, been chased after, and been stabbed. She had definitely been through the wringer. Luckily, she met him.
"Sleep tight. I will locate who hurt you and help you get your revenge," Sean whispered huskily as he gazed at Norah on the bed, the promise clear in his words.
"What? You didn't succeed? Fine, I might as well treat the deposit as a loss! Don't call me again or contact me in any way. Just get lost!" The fuming Kathy disconnected the call. "Madeline, I'm so angry! I paid them two hundred thousand dollars, and they still failed! Do you think Norah will get even with us if she knows it?"
Madeline didn't pause her manicure and lightly blew away some dust from her nails. “Why are you so scared? Does she possess any proof? Does she even have an inkling we had planned all of this? You know, that gang isn't very notorious, and only a few people are a part of it. Norah won't know about them."
Kathy's eyelids fluttered as she thoughtfully said, “You're right. But Norah has incredible luck. Over twenty people chased her, but she still managed to escape. At least they injured her. That eases my frustration a little bit."
Norah, with Joanna's support, had verbally and physically assaulted Kathy. Kathy held onto the grudge, desperate to get revenge. Today, although the people she hired had been unsuccessful, they did manage to injure Norah, relieving some of her fury.
“Madeline, I heard that the Scott family is hosting an auction next week. Did the Carter family receive an invitation?" Kathy slapped her forehead, finally recalling the most important topic. “One invitation allows one person and one companion to enter. It seems that all the prestigious families of Glophia have received invitations."
Madeline replied nonchalantly, "Derek told me about it. I'll be attending the auction as his companion."
Madeline spoke without looking up, having missed it when Kathy's eyes flashed with unwillingness.
“Madeline, I'm about to attend blind dates. Can you let me attend the auction so I can learn something? I want to go with my brother and have a new experience," Kathy put away her long face and pled.
Madeline's expression instantly soured. She had been wondering why Kathy had brought up the auction so abruptly. Now she knew about Kathy's intentions.
"Anyway, you're always accompanying my brother. You won't miss any auctions or events in the future. Would you be so kind as to give me this opportunity?" Kathy carefully studied Madeline's facial expressions. She might be arrogant in front of Norah, but she didn't dare to treat Madeline the same way.
Kathy knew she couldn't afford to offend Madeline since the latter was the Powell family's most adored daughter. If Madeline complained to Derek or her parents about any mistreatment, Kathy would surely be made to pay a heavy price.
The color drained from Kathy's face as she remembered how her mother and grandmother had strictly disciplined her recently.
"Please? Please, Madeline," Kathy urged.
Madeline looked conflicted. She was unwilling to surrender this occasion to Kathy. At that moment, Derek strode in and noticed that Madeline was almost in tears.
“What's going on? Kathy, did you say something and harass Madeline?"
Derek asked.
Kathy frantically waved her hands as she blurted out, "No, I didn't. I was just asking Madeline if I could come to the auction with you."
"Nonsense!" Derek sternly reprimanded. "My companion will always be Madeline. What new trouble are you trying to create? Go home immediately!"
Derek turned to Madeline with concern and comfortingly said, “Haven't I always only taken you to all events in the past? You must join me for this time's auction as well!"
