Chapter: 138
"Alan, helping her is one thing, given how much she means to you. But spare me the heroic tales afterward. Doesn't this seem absurd to you?"
At a loss, Alan's voice softened. "Kaitlin, why won't you trust what I'm saying?"
“How can I trust you when lipstick doesn't just appear on a shirt?"
Her temper flared anew.
Alan inhaled deeply, his frustration evident. "Then what can I do to make you believe me?"
Kaitlin's interest waned. Was it really her place to guide him on how to act?
If he truly had got over Ashley, he would know to distance himself.
Yet, his choices only deepened her irritation.
"Unless there's more, I'd suggest you leave. I have a client appointment tonight." Her tone was nonchalant, a clear signal for him to exit.
Alan remained motionless, his gaze locked on Kaitlin.
The heavy air between them was only disturbed by a knock at the office door.
“Come in," Kaitlin said.
Quintin entered the room, unsurprised to find Alan there. He greeted him with a nonchalant nod. "Ah, the ex-husband's here too. We should head out, Kaitlin."
Alan's face clouded over instantly. No one understood the dynamics better than he did. Alan was convinced that Quintin had a crush on Kaitlin.
"We need to leave now, or we'll be late," Quintin said.
Quintin shot Kaitlin a significant glance. She paused briefly before nodding in agreement.
"Alright, let's go."
Kaitlin rose to her feet, her movements slow as her pregnancy advanced.
"You really shouldn't push yourself too hard, Kaitlin. Let me drive you home to rest," Alan urged, reaching out to grasp her arm in a desperate bid to persuade her.
"This client tonight is crucial, and Kaitlin isn't drinking. It's merely a dinner. I'll make sure she gets home safely afterward. There's no cause for concern," Quintin retorted, his eyes gleaming with a challenge.
Kaitlin withdrew her arm sharply, her voice turning frosty.
"Alan, perhaps you should concentrate on your own affairs. I'm perfectly capable of managing my responsibilities. Come on, Quintin."
The pair left the office together, leaving a visibly disheartened Alan standing alone.
Once they were settled in the car, Kaitlin let out a weary sigh.
