Chapter: 204
Owen took a quick glance at the bag and scoffed, “You're quite brave, fitting for Alan Hewitt's lady."
Kaitlin's eyes widened, a cold shiver racing down her spine. "Who... who are you working for?"
"That doesn't matter right now. What does is that you'll have to cooperate if you want me to secure the ransom. If not, I can't vouch for your safety."
Owen restarted the engine, casting wary looks at Kaitlin in the backseat, his tone threatening.
“Keep it together. Make one wrong move, and it could cost your baby."
He flashed Kaitlin a malevolent grin in the rearview mirror. "It wouldn't bother me to harm the baby before demanding a ransom from Alan."
Kaitlin's expression turned steely; she believed his cruel words. But she knew she couldn't just sit there waiting for the worst. "Who are you? If ransom is what you want, I can pay it. Ever heard of Oasis Jewelry? I can meet any price you name."
Owen chuckled dismissively. “You're quite the negotiator, but unfortunately, someone wants you dead."
As he spoke, the dreadful reality settled in Kaitlin's mind.
Besides Lilliana and Ashley, who else would despise her enough to wish her dead?
“Have you considered that if you kill me, you won't survive either? Alan won't just let this slide. Why not stop the car so we can discuss this? We're in the middle of nowhere, and remember, I'm pregnant. I can't run from you."
As Kaitlin spoke, she calmly weighed the pros and cons, attempting to reason with him.
Owen, peering at her through the rearview mirror, seemed taken aback.
"You're unusually calm."
"I won't press charges for the kidnapping. Just let me go. We can figure something out, but you need to stop the car first." Kaitlin glanced at her phone, which had fallen out of reach. She needed to keep Owen engaged and off guard.
Eventually, the car slowed to a halt.
“Alright, let's hear what you have to say." Owen turned around, heightening the tension in the confined space.
“I can offer you a sum of money, twice what anyone else would pay you. You know I can afford it, and that amount could very well save my life."
Owen pondered this proposition. "Really?"
"Absolutely, it's the truth!"
The more confidently Kaitlin asserted herself, the more Owen seemed tempted.
"Then send some money to this account right now, and no funny business."
Owen handed her his phone, but Kaitlin merely smiled.
“I don't have the accountant's number on me. Should I call Alan for help?"
