Chapter: 10
But instead of handing the contract over to Anna, Bethany went to see Carson first.

She had been working on this project for so long; it didn't make sense for her to let it go just yet. Of course, she knew that she had to butter up to Carson if she wanted to keep the project. So, even though the mishap wasn't her fault, she had to apologize to Carson to save her job.

Carson pulled a long face as soon as he saw Bethany. “What is it now?" he snapped.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Smith, for what happened yesterday. I thought about it, and I now realize that it was indeed my fault." Wearing a flattering smile, Bethany stepped forward. "But I've always been in charge of the Zucron Company project. I'm afraid that if I hand over the project to Anna, mistakes will be made and we might suffer more losses. So, I hope you can forgive me and give me another chance."

She even bowed her head slightly to show Carson how apologetic she was, reminding him in the most sincere tone that he shouldn't act on impulse.

The higher-ups were already dissatisfied with the Glora Company project. If something went wrong with the Zucron Company project, Carson's head would be the first to roll.

After mulling over her proposition, Carson raised his head and locked eyes with her.

"Are you saying you're the only person who knows how to handle this project?"

"No, sir, that's not what I meant. I just want the project to push through without any hitches. Look at the contract; I've negotiated with them countless times to finally reach the highest value. You know how much effort I've put into this."

Carson took the contract and scanned it. It was evident Bethany had done a commendable job.

He coughed slightly and frowned, saying, "Fine, I'll give you one last chance. You saw yesterday how strict Mr. Bates is in managing the whole company. If this project encounters any more problems, you'll be fired."

Despite his thinly veiled threat, Bethany breathed a sigh of relief.

At least he was willing to let her keep the project. “Thank you for giving me another chance, Mr. Smith. I promise I'll work hard!"

In the corner of the hotel, Jonathan withdrew his gaze and stubbed out his cigarette, his expression frosty.

His friend, Nikolas Bennett, who had been standing aside watching the scene, couldn't help but chuckle. "Tsk! That girl's gorgeous. No wonder you're into her! Don't worry, bud. Let me handle this. I promise that by the end of the night, she'll be in your bed!"

Jonathan frowned and remained silent.

Misconstruing Jonathan's silence for acquiescence, Nikolas became more excited. "I don't need to do anything drastic to an ordinary employee like her; I just need to find some thugs that'll scare her."

"Hurt her and you won't Live to see tomorrow," Jonathan growled.

After settling things with Carson, Bethany went back to her room to pack her things.

Fortunately, the crisis had been resolved during this business trip—and not just the work crisis, but also the whole incident with Jonathan.

Bethany took a deep breath, trying her best to banish those messy thoughts to the back of her mind. Just then, her phone rang.

She glanced at the caller ID. When she saw that it was the hospital calling, her heart leaped to her throat.

With trembling hands, she tapped the answer key and pressed the phone up to her hear. "Hello?"

"Is this Bethany Holt? Your mother had a heart attack and is in critical condition. She was sent to the resuscitation room just now. Please come quickly!"
