Chapter: 103
Each act seemed so unlike Jonathan, yet he had done them all for Maddie.

Bethany chose not to read the letter. She quietly put it back with the book and left the study.

Bethany felt she had intruded. These were Jonathan's private affairs, not for her to explore or feel anything about.

A mere substitute like her shouldn't overstep.

After Nikolas returned, Jonathan left the hospital.

Jonathan got into his car but didn't start it. Instead, he called his mother, Francine Bates.

“Jon, have you finished your work?"

Given the time difference, it was quite late where Francine was.

"Yes." Jonathan leaned back, massaging his temples. "Maddie mentioned you're coming back?"

"Yes! Maddie's birthday is around the corner and I heart she had surgery. I want to be there for her." Francine clearly viewed Maddie as part of the family.

Francine's voice was soft and soothing, always calm. But Jonathan knew his mother wasn't as benign as she appeared to others. She was a control freak.

"It's not a major surgery. I've just visited her. Since you've been unwell, the doctor recommended you avoid long travels.”

“It's been a while since I've been home. I'm planning to stay for an extended period this time. I can rest at home just as well, and I'll get to see you and Maddie more often."

“Mom, you really should focus on your recovery before making any plans."

Jonathan had hoped to gradually introduce Bethany to his mother, from a meeting to familiarity and then acceptance.

However, if Francine returned now, keeping the marriage secret would become increasingly difficult.

“It sounds like you're trying to keep me away, huh?" Francine caught Jonathan's reluctance. "Did you and Maddie have a fight? You two-—"

"We're just friends outside of work and colleagues at the office. There's no fight," Jonathan interjected, stopping her from speculating further. "I'll visit you once I wrap up here."

He had planned to bring Bethany with him. However, Maddie's actions had thrown a wrench in his plans.

“You're already swamped with work. I'll come back. I had everything arranged, and even bought the ticket. I told Maddie to keep it a secret so I could surprise you, but she went ahead and told you anyway!"

Francine chuckled. "Once you two are married, Maddie will listen to whatever you say."

Jonathan was left speechless.

"Alright, it's nearly midnight here. I need to sleep. Good night, Jon,"

Francine said, then hung up.
