Chapter: 110
As she did so, Jonathan's image unexpectedly flashed through her mind.
It seemed that pretending Jayson was Jonathan was the only way she could ease her defenses.
"Are you ready?" Jayson's voice was gentle and caring, so convincingly loving that no one would suspect he was merely acting.
Bethany realized Jayson must see her much like he did his cousin, Aimee, which explained why he seemed so genuine.
"I'm ready. Let's do this."
After all, there was no turning back now.
Bethany and Jayson approached the door of ward together. The two bodyguards hesitated, uncertain whether to intercept them.
After all, Jayson was an unfamiliar face.
"This is my husband," Bethany announced it loud enough for her mother to hear.
Standing beside her, Jayson couldn't suppress a grin. He leaned in and whispered to Bethany, "You make it sound Like you're introducing a colleague rather than a husband."
She thought about what she had just said and realized how formal it sounded.
So when Marie spotted them, they were sharing a light moment.
"Mom!"
Upon seeing her mother's stern face, Bethany's smile faded, and she walked over. She stood by the bed, keeping Jayson a bit away from her mother.
She was worried Marie might lash out and slap him.
“Ma'am, I apologize. I've been swamped with work, so I haven't been able to see you. That's on me." Jayson seamlessly stepped into his role as the husband. His face showed a mix of apology and anxiety, like someone meeting his partner's parent for the first time.
But Marie wasn't easily deceived. She scrutinized them both before her gaze settled on Jayson's face. “Have you actually registered to get married?"
"Yes..." He bowed his head. "It was a hasty decision, but I truly love Bethany and want to be with her forever."
"And what about you?" Marie turned her question to Bethany.
Bethany was caught off guard, and her reply didn't flow as smoothly as Jayson's. "I feel the same, or I wouldn't have agreed to get the marriage license so impulsively."
“And what do your parents think about my daughter? Do they know about this?" Marie asked Jayson.
"They do!" Jayson answered. "And they really like Bethany. They think I'm fortunate to marry such a wonderful woman."
“Really?” Marie scoffed. “Then why didn't they come with you today?"
Bethany realized her mother was trying to put Jayson on the spot, so she quickly interjected, “Mom! Didn't we agree that I'd bring just him today?"
