Chapter: 170
Back at her hotel, Bethany inhaled deeply before taking Carson's call.

Carson was livid, hurling insults through the phone.

“Have you lost your fucking mind? Keep your troubles to yourself. Don't drag me down with you!"

“I'm sorry, Mr. Smith. Just give me a bit of time, and I'll prove Maddie framed me!" she pleaded.

"Give you time? Then who gives me time? Besides, she's the chief lawyer at Bates Group. How could she possibly set you up, an assistant?"

Who would even believe that?

Bethany's expression tightened, sensing that Carson believed she was just making excuses.

“I started wondering how you suddenly had enough money for your mother's surgery. Turns out, you sold the core technical drawings!"

“I didn't!" she protested vehemently. "I never sold any drawings."

“Then explain how you managed to pay for your mother's surgery? Aimee even called me, asking if I could lend her some money, which I declined. Later, she mentioned that you had taken care of the medical bills. At that point, I was baffled as to how you acquired such a sum so quickly."

Carson's suspicions weren't unfounded and lined up with the facts.

A light bulb went off for Bethany.

How smart Maddie was!

Maddie knew she couldn't disclose her deal with Jonathan to anyone; doing so would breach their agreement and incur hefty penalties.

To the outside world, the narrative that Bethany had leaked the drawings to cover her mother's medical costs was foolproof. Who else would stand by her now?

"I didn't sell the drawings for money to fund my mother's surgery. The company can look into it!" Bethany declared.

"You don't need to bring your complaint to me. The headquarters will surely send an investigator," Carson yelled. “Having you in my team is just my terrible Luck!"

Bethany could almost see Carson's face, twisted with rage as if he wanted to rip her apart.

Then, the call ended abruptly. He probably threw his phone in anger.

Bethany dug her fingernails into her palm, trying to force herself to stay calm. She knew she couldn't afford to lose her composure.

After all, she wasn't the one who leaked the.

She thought about it carefully. To clear her name, she needed to track down the record that Maddie had requested the drawings from her.

That way, the company might investigate both her and Maddie.

Otherwise, Bethany would be the only one blamed while Maddie would stay clear of the scandal.
