“If my father gives you any trouble, just let it slide. I'll deal with him when this is over," Jonathan said, not wanting her to face any grief.

"You're all doing this for me-for the antidote. I won't take it to heart."

Bethany had no desire to linger in the past anymore, not since Jonathan's mother had passed away.

Dwelling on those memories felt like a trap, a cruel way to stretch out her own suffering. Life, she knew, was too fleeting for that.
