She cleared her throat, buying time. “Jonathan, listen. I've already taken the temporary antidote and left. Nothing happened."

When he spoke again, the warmth had leached from his voice, replaced by steely concern. "Didn't I tell you not to act on your own? Bethany, what if Ryan had hurt you, or worse? Have you considered what that would do to me, to our children?"

Jonathan had no choice but to let Bethany play along with Ryan.
