Chapter: 214
The stalemate was interrupted by a doctor entering to request signatures for some paperwork. Jonathan muttered, “I'll go check on that," and exited the room.

Given Francine's delicate health and her susceptibility to depressive episodes, the doctor emphasized the importance of accommodating her wishes to stave off potential self-destructive behavior, which carried a high risk of mortality.

When Jonathan reentered the room, he found an unexpected addition.

Maddie.

Clearly, Francine had summoned her.

As Jonathan stood in the doorway, his expression was visibly strained -a clear sign of distress that Maddie recognized from their years of acquaintance.

"What are you doing here?" Jonathan asked, his voice cold, even though he likely guessed why.

"I. L." Maddie faltered.

"I asked her to come." Francine interjected, her voice stronger than before, though her complexion was still pale.

Maddie shifted uncomfortably, unsure whether to sit or stand.

“Is this what you wanted? Are you happy now?" Jonathan's words were sharp, directed squarely at Maddie, disregarding his mother nearby.

"Jonathan, what do you mean? How could I possibly want to see your mother in distress?" Maddie replied, her eyes widening in feigned innocence.

Francine's frown deepened. "How is this Maddie's fault?"

"Isn't she the one who told you about Bethany?" Jonathan's accusation was pointed; he was certain that no one but Maddie could have informed his mother.

Even though Nikolas often defended Maddie, he wouldn't dare share such information with Francine.

So the only person who could have known was Maddie herself.

Upon hearing this, Maddie bowed her head, her silence serving as a tacit admission.

Francine gestured for Maddie to help her sit up. “Don't be angry with Maddie. I pressed her for the information. She wanted to keep it a secret for your sake, but I insisted on knowing the truth."

“I'm sorry, Jonathan. I never thought it would lead to your mother being hospitalized. If I had known, I would have kept it to myself.”

Maddie's eyes welled up with tears.

Francine embraced her. “Why are you blaming her? Just tell me, Jonathan, is what she said true or not? Don't forget; you have a fiancee!"

“Mom, I never consented to that."

"But at the hospital, you said you'd consider it if my health improved. Isn't that essentially agreeing?"

At that time, Jonathan had no other choice. And he hadn't yet found Bethany.
