Chapter: 221
Bethany had seen the announcement, which was precisely why she was seeking clarification from HR.
She was gathering tangible proof.
Bates Group could not simply expel her based on an unverified finding.
She was prepared to take legal action.
"If you've seen it, then surely you understand the accusations against you? The company is being quite generous by not seeking damages," the HR representative remarked, trying to sound persuasive yet dripping with condescension.
Bethany was aware that by now, she was likely the subject of widespread gossip throughout Bates Group. Even those who remained silent were likely passing judgment on her in private.
"I don't have time for arguments. I just need to confirmis the reason for my dismissal based on the investigation's conclusion that I betrayed the company?"
The HR representative lost their patience. "Yes! You've caused the Bates Group significant trouble..."
Bethany hung up before they could finish and saved the recording on her device.
She had initially sought only to clear her name and expose Maddie's scheme to frame her. She never intended to create issues for the company, but now, she was resolved not to trust anyone else.
With her plans set, Bethany stood up to leave Aimee's house. As she opened the door, she encountered Jonathan. The CEO of Bates Group, who was supposed to be in Canbidge for business, stood before her, looking weary from travel.
Their eyes met-one indifferent, the other weary.
"Mr. Bates."
Bethany's greeting set a formal tone, widening the emotional distance between them.
Jonathan, appearing slightly unsteady, his eyes heavy with fatigue, leaned against the staircase corner, half his figure cast in shadow, but his gaze never left her.
"Bethany, I had nothing to do with that announcement."
"I know."
Bethany believed that Jonathan was not the type to engage in deceitful tactics.
But she also understood that the distance between her and Jonathan was more than just a matter of hierarchy.
"I came to take you home." Unexpectedly, Jonathan shifted away from discussing the company issues and extended his hand towards her.
Bethany did not move, her voice detached. “I'm afraid I can no longer come with you."
Jonathan's expression hardened. "What do you mean?"
“Let's terminate the marriage, Mr. Bates. I will clear my name and handle Maddie's actions in my own way.”
Her words implied a finality, a decision to no longer involve him in her battles.
