Chapter: 251
“I'm doing alright. I'll pick you up after work."
"Okay."
Jonathan stared at the simple "Okay" she had sent and remained quiet for a long stretch.
He didn't know how the situation would unfold, yet he was determined not to divorce Bethany.
Meanwhile, just as Bethany set her phone down, she caught her mother looking at her with a piercing gaze, as though eager to speak.
“Is something wrong? Do you feel okay?"
“Have Jayson come to the hospital tomorrow," Marie instructed, sensing her daughter's reluctance. "If you don't tell him, I will."
Bethany exhaled wearily. "Why do you need him around? He's caught up with his work."
“I find his company pleasant. Is it so wrong to enjoy his presence?"
Marie countered.
Bethany wasn't fooled, though. She understood her mother's underlying motive.
"Mom, let's not involve others who have nothing to do with this."
“But you were the one who introduced us! Now, when I wish to talk to him, you object?" Marie protested, pretending to be unconcerned.
"Fine. I'll contact him myself." She reached for her phone.
Bethany gave in quickly and said, "Okay, I'll talk to him! I'll call him after his work, okay?"
She was wary of her mother's tone. Over the years, Marie had never been good at communicating.
It was always either ultimatums or sharp comments.
Under her mother's watchful eyes, Bethany opened her laptop and resumed her work. She remained committed to her job at Bates Group, knowing any lapse could set her back significantly.
Falling behind now could mean struggling to catch up later, even if she was allowed back on the project.
Hours ticked by as Bethany focused on assembling her reports, eventually sending them off to Brody.
Noticing the day had turned to evening and Jonathan would soon be leaving work, she began to gather her things. “Mom, I'll visit you again tomorrow."
“WiLL you be staying the night with Jonathan?" Marie inquired sharply, taking Bethany by surprise.
Seeing her daughter's silence, Marie realized what was happening.
She frowned and said abruptly, "I understand that even if I don't push for a divorce, the Bates family will make it happen anyway. It's bound to happen. I just want you to maintain some dignity in the process."
