Chapter: 255
"I'll drive you there, at least."
Unable to argue with his determination, Bethany agreed.
Once they arrived at the hospital, Bethany hurried inside without a proper farewell.
Left alone in the car, Jonathan watched her rush away before dialing his father's number.
After a few rings, Godfrey answered.
“What's this about?" he asked.
“Did you do something to Bethany's mother?" Jonathan asked.
Godfrey's response was a dismissive chuckle, not confirming anything.
“Son, when will you see the vast gulf between you and Bethany? You two aren't a match."
"I've told you before, Bethany is where I draw the line. Don't harm her."
Jonathan's grip on the steering wheel tightened, the veins in his hands standing out, his dark eyes shadowed with concern.
“If your mother could hear you now, she'd be devastated. You're putting a woman before your own mother's well-being," Godfrey stated plainly. "I've already compromised. You just need to pretend to be in a relationship with Maddie in front of your mother. I don't care what you do with Bethany in private. If you can't even do that, don't blame me for being ruthless. You might be able to protect Bethany, but you can't protect everyone around her, nor her reputation in the business world."
As the chairman of Bates Group, it would be easy for Godfrey to ruin Bethany. Even with Jonathan's support, public opinion could be harsh, and no matter how hard Bethany worked, no one would care and appreciate her efforts. Her talents and hard work overshadowed by the scandal and she would be reduced to eye candy.
That would torment Bethany, knowing her personality.
Jonathan realized that his father must have orchestrated the recent troubling event involving Bethany's mother.
"Don't harm her," he said through clenched teeth, his expression hardening. "I'll consider your proposal."
"Good. I'd hate for our family matters to become public spectacle."
Godfrey hung up.
Shortly after, Jonathan received a message from Bethany.
"I saw your car still downstairs. You should go home. My mom is stable now, don't worry! She just got a bit frightened."
Jonathan turned his head, as if drawn by Bethany's unseen presence.
"I'll wait for you."
After sending the message, he launched his work software and dove into document reviews.
Bethany's entry into his life changed everything. Jonathan couldn't imagine returning to East Shade Bay alone; it needed her touch to truly feel Like home.
