Chapter: 257
Bethany immediately checked Twitter.

As she suspected, Maddie's confession didn't settle the issue but ignited further controversy. Comments showed sympathy for Maddie, the apparent offender, hinting she might have been coerced. Some argued her kindness led her to admit fault to protect Bethany's career.

But she hadn't mentioned any setup. Maddie's post was elusive about the specifics and motivations, appearing almost contrived.

This was Maddie's scheme; she mastered the art of the tactical retreat.

In this precarious situation, her actions ensured that even if future evidence confirmed her guilt, there would remain a shadow of doubt about its veracity, potentially exonerating Bethany.

"Well, the truth is finally out! Bethany, you can get back to your work."

Aimee, with her innocent nature, believed the issue was resolved. She didn't realize that Maddie hadn't really apologized.

Not wanting Aimee to worry, Bethany smiled and replied, "Yes."

“Got any plans this weekend? How about we grab dinner? It's something to celebrate! My treat!"

“I'm really sorry, but my mom's sick again. I can't leave her right now. Rain check on the celebration?"

Aimee sighed. "Alright, I'll wait. If you need anything, just let me know. My job's mot keeping me too busy. Ever since you left, Carson's been treating me like crap. I want to quit!"

"Hey, don't. Don't leave your job at Ensson Corporation because of me. Stay focused on what's best for you. Carson may be irritable, but he is skilled. There's a lot you can learn from working under him."

Bethany always endured Carson's scolding for that reason. It wasn't that she was too gentle. She was eager to learn. Carson had spent many years in the industry.

Aimee scoffed, “Seriously? My cousin promised me a job at his school. At least there, I won't have to endure the constant insults."

Bethany merely curled her lips, choosing silence over words.

Aimee was different from her. She always had a safety net, surrounded by people who loved her and mapped out her future. She didn't need to carve out a career in investment industry to get by.

After chatting for a while longer, they hung up. Bethany noticed Jonathan had prepared breakfast and stood waiting by the bedroom door.

His figure nearly filled the doorway.

“Was that Aimee on the phone?" he asked.

“Yes, it was." Bethany got up, changed her clothes, and walked with Jonathan to the dining room.

Jonathan looked like he wanted to say something. His mouth opened several times, but no words came out.

Bethany finally broke the silence. "Did you see Maddie's tweet?"

"Just ignore her," Jonathan said.

“Did Maddie's resignation hit Bates Group hard?" Bethany asked, picking up a piece of toast as if it were an afterthought.
