Chapter: 266
Bethany was taken aback. "But... this could also attract a lot of criticism."

Jonathan had always maintained a strong reputation in the business community. He was known as a stand-up individual, and there had never been any negative remarks about him. This move could lead to widespread doubt.

"So, don't let Mr. Bates down."

Envy brewed among outsiders.

They believed Bethany was blessed by Jonathan's favor, but her heart was heavy as lead, grappling with how to reciprocate his generosity.

Bethany knew that enduring relationships required equilibrium.

Balancing their status was challenging, but she was determined to match his efforts tit for tat.

After a taxing day's work, Jonathan's message arrived as she prepared to leave, urging her to wait and accompany him home post-meeting.

Seizing the moment, Bethany tidied up her workspace.

She had a whirlwind of tasks and couldn't spare a moment to organize and file the documents, though their exact locations were etched in her memory.

Glancing at her phone, she noted no message from Jonathan, possibly detained in the meeting.

She stretched, contemplating a stroll. But just as she exited, she encountered the last person she desired to see, Maddie.

Maddie hadn't anticipated encountering her either. Clearly taken aback, she asked, “What are you doing here?"

“I work for Bates Group. Isn't it expected for me to stay here?"

Bethany said. Her unspoken question hung in the air—why was Maddie, who had resigned, skulking around?

Frowning, Maddie retorted, "Don't think you've won. Jonathan's parents will never accept you."

Bethany smiled wryly. "Jonathan's love is what matters most to me. Despite having support from many people, you still can't win Jonathan's heart, can you?"

“Humph!" Maddie dismissed Bethany with a contemptuous scoff, not taking her seriously in the slightest. "Then appreciate the moments you get to see him. If you want something fancy to eat, just go ahead and enjoy it. And if you want to buy some brand-name clothes, feel free to do that. I don't mind if you're using Jonathan's money now, but it will be mine soon."

Bethany remained silent, her silence a deliberate shield against engaging with Maddie.

Engaging in argument felt as futile as shouting at the wind, an exercise in futility she had no desire to entertain.

Maddie pressed on, “His parents gave me a set of jewelry in his name today. Do you want to know the price?"

"Yes." Bethany gave a solemn nod, fixing her gaze intently on Maddie.

"You should be more specific. How much is it? Is it really sent in Jonathan's name? If it is, it belongs to our marital property, and as his current legal wife, I have the right to take it back. You're the lawyer here, you should know better."

Maddie was struck dumb, unprepared for Bethany's sharp retort.
