Chapter: 280
As the doctor's words sank in, Bethany's mind went blank.
“According to your blood test, the baby appears to be developing well."
The doctor made notes in her medical file without looking up. "Do you want to keep the baby?"
Receiving no response, the doctor glanced up, noting her stunned expression.
Experienced with various patient reactions, the doctor repeated, “Do you wish to keep the baby, or would you like to discuss this with your husband first?"
Bethany was jolted back to the present, her lips parched. “Am I really pregnant?"
The doctor nodded affirmatively. "Given your HCG levels, you appear to be about six to seven weeks pregnant. Hadn't you noticed your period was late?”
Bethany murmured, "I assumed it was just work stress."
"You are definitely pregnant. I recommend an ultrasound to confirm everything. If the embryo is developing well, you might even detect a heartbeat." The doctor then glanced at Bethany. "Would you like to proceed with the ultrasound now, or would you prefer to take some time to discuss it?"
“I need to discuss it first," Bethany declared, feeling overwhelmed by the sudden news.
The doctor responded with a nod of understanding.
"Alright then." The doctor closed Bethany's medical file and handed it back to her. "Whatever your decision regarding the pregnancy, it's important to make it soon to not miss early screenings."
"Thank you, doctor," Bethany said, her voice laden with gratitude.
"You're very pretty. I'm sure the baby will be beautiful, too." Out of the blue, the doctor complimented her.
Bethany stepped out of the examination room, her hands clutching the test results. She found a bench, sat down, and tried to gather her thoughts.
She was pregnant.
She was indeed pregnant!
The news blindsided her.
Bethany feared little, but she knew her mother would strongly disapprove of her having this baby. It felt like destiny was mocking her, her situation eerily reflecting that of Marie's past.
It would surely awaken her mother's deepest fears.
She remained seated, lost in thought for over ten minutes, before she regained her composure and reached for her phone. That was when she noticed several missed calls from her mother's doctor.
With a racing heart, Bethany quickly returned the call.
The doctor's voice was urgent. “Why haven't you been answering your phone? Your mother's back in the emergency room. Come quickly!"
Without even properly hanging up, Bethany dashed towards the ward.
