Chapter: 391
Bethany went back to the hotel instead of going to the site.
As soon as she opened the door to her room, she lay down on the bed without even bothering to put her bag down.
She continuously replayed Jonathan's voice in her head.
Truly, if Bethany was allowed to say how she really felt, she'd express how she really missed Jonathan to the point that she even wanted to record those few words he had said earlier.
By doing that, whenever she was about to go insane, she could calm herself down by listening to his voice, just like an addict whose thirst was quenched.
But in reality, it wasn't possible.
They had lots of hindrances they faced in between them. She had to remind herself to stay away from Jonathan.
ALL of a sudden, her phone rang and she sprung up from the bed with tears running down her cheeks. She wasn't even aware that she was crying.
After taking a few long and deep breaths, she answered the phone.
“Hello, Ryan," Bethany greeted.
"You didn't return. Is everything okay? Did Nikolas upset you? Tell me the truth! I know he and I are friends, but I'll never support injustice." Ryan didn't have any idea what had been going on, but he presumed that Nikolas must have given Bethany a tough time.
"No. We only discussed some matters of the past. We had a misunderstanding back then when we worked together at Bates Group,"
Bethany said, trying to assure him.
Ryan was a little bit skeptical about what she had just said. “If it was just a misunderstanding, why don't you come over let's straighten it out?"
“There won't be any need for that. I won't have any sort of contact with him in the future, so there's nothing to straighten out. Ryan, as soon as I'm done with this project, I'll be leaving the country. I don't want to engage in the past anymore," Bethany said, after which she took a deep breath. "I sincerely apologize for not making it to lunch. I'll treat you to a meal next time we meet up. I'm feeling sick today, so I can't come over."
Ryan sighed. “I don't know what went down between you and Nikolas, but one thing I'm sure of is that you're a good person. And if there is any issue between the both of you, he's definitely the one behind it. Not to worry, I won't let you get hurt, at least not while I'm here."
"Ryan, thank you. But my husband wouldn't be happy if heard this,"
Bethany replied with a smile. She didn't want to hurt Ryan's feelings, but she didn't want him to be under any false impression either.
She didn't have the strength to entertain anyone's pursuit, and certainly not her boss.
To her, no one could measure up to Jonathan.
“Bethany, do you love your husband that much?" Ryan asked with a wry smile, attempting to mask his disappointment.
He knew he didn't stand a chance.
Bethany sighed. “Ryan, I just want to live a peaceful life and be an ordinary person."
“And does your husband love you as much?" Ryan persisted, unwilling to let go.
