Chapter: 40
Before she could say anything, she met Jonathan's gaze and saw the displeasure in his eyes.
“Bethany, I was the one who arranged for the specialist to treat your mother, but you gave the credit to your boyfriend instead?"
Bethany was stunned. She didn't think Jonathan would get so upset.
Smiling awkwardly, she waved her hand and tried to play it cool. "Mr. Bates, you don't know my mom. She's very old-fashioned and would never understand our contract, so I hid the truth from her."
“Do you plan to get back together with your boyfriend when our contract ends in a year?" His question was pointed, his eyes piercing, leaving Bethany at a loss for words.
If she had known this would happen, she never would've even mentioned having a boyfriend. Now, she had to deal with the consequences of that little white Lie.
"Well... I haven't thought about it yet."
After all, if she told Jonathan that she never intended to get back together with her supposed boyfriend, he might suspect that she'd protest the termination of the contract when the time came.
“You have thought about it," Jonathan said icily. “Otherwise, why wouldn't you tell your mother that you and your boyfriend have broken up?"
Bethany wasn't a good liar, and now that all her lies were catching up to her, her mind was starting to go blank. “Well... I..."
"Reconsider the contract," Jonathan said. Standing at the end of the hospital corridor, his tall figure was half-hidden in darkness, his tone cold and detached. "Bethany, I'm a neat freak."
Bethany couldn't understand why Jonathan was bringing up his mysophobia now. Just as she opened her mouth to respond, he turned around and walked away, leaving her standing there in confusion.
“What the heck was that all about?" she grumbled to herself.
Bethany frowned, finding it difficult to get along with Jonathan. Not only did she have to meet his seemingly insatiable appetite in bed, but she also had to learn to navigate his unpredictable moods.
When Bethany returned to the ward, the doctor was busy monitoring Marie's heart rate.
Marie looked up and saw the grim expression on her daughter's face.
Worried, she asked agitatedly, “What's wrong? Did your boss get angry at you or something?"
“No." Bethany pulled up a chair and sat down with a sigh, settling into the rhythm of peeling an apple for Marie.
"I don't think I said anything offensive just now. I just asked him to look out for you," Marie said, pondering over her conversation with Jonathan. "Your boss is so young, not to mention tall and handsome. Why is he so narrow-minded? I didn't say anything to offend him. Why would he be mad at you?"
Finally, Bethany took a deep breath and said helplessly, “Can you stop overthinking things? This has nothing to do with him, okay? I just get annoyed whenever I think about work."
"If you're stressed with work, just take things one step at a time. Don't rush into things, and don't push yourself past your limit. Speaking of which, you should head home early today and get some rest. You never know-maybe those problems at work will be solved by tomorrow!"
"Okay, Mom." Bethany handed the peeled apple to Marie and then glanced at her watch. “It's getting pretty late. I'll get going soon."
She wasn't lying when she said that thinking about work stressed her out. After all, although she was going to be stationed at the head office for further training for a while, she still had to handle her work at Ensson Corporation.
Bethany chatted with her mother for a while before finally taking her leave. By the time she stepped out of the hospital, it was already dark out.
