“I'm just being realistic." Ryan chuckled. “Alright, find out if the boy is really his son, so I can be in on the gossip."

“Damn you!"

Nikolas hung up the phone abruptly.

He'd meant to call Jonathan to check his whereabouts, but before he could find the number, Maddie's frantic calls flooded in.

Nikolas hesitated, but inadvertently hit the wrong button.

Maddie's urgent voice came through. “Where are you? I... I think I'm having a heart attack..."

"What?" Nikolas was stunned. "Since when did you have heart problems?"

"Never mind that. Can you come and take me to the hospital?"

Nikolas wanted to agree instinctively, but the kid was still asleep.

Should he wake him now?

"Nikolas... Are you going to leave me alone too?" Maddie asked.

Her tone suggested real pain, like she might collapse at any moment.

“Alright, I'm on my way! Send me your location."

"Okay."

Nikolas was, deep down, a soft-hearted guy.

He stood and glanced at the sleeping Rowan beside him, unable to suppress a small smile.

After all these years, he finally got to see what Jonathan looked like sleeping. It must be just like this Little one.

Concerned about leaving him alone and worried he might wake up frightened, Nikolas instructed his assistant to come before heading out.

He figured he'd only be away for half an hour, so everything should be fine.

Nikolas drove to Maddie's location.

It was much more remote than he realized; he hadn't known Maddie had moved out here.

It was far from the city and even farther from Bates Group.

“Why here of all places?" Nikolas helped her out, carefully opening the car door.

"I've been restless lately, I couldn't sleep, I thought it'd be quieter here." Maddie winced, clutching her chest.
