Chapter: 53
Now that Marie felt better, she soon fell asleep. Bethany took this opportunity to slip out into the hospital corridor to catch her breath.
ALL of a sudden, she felt the urge to smoke, though she had never smoked a cigarette before in her life. Perhaps the nicotine would relieve the suffocating pressure in her heart.
She leaned against the wall and panted, struggling to catch her breath. Just as she was mustering the courage to go to the security department to ask for updates, her phone rang-it was Jonathan calling.
Glancing at the time, she saw that it was already seven o'clock in the evening.
"Where are you?" Jonathan's deep voice sounded from the other end of the Line.
“Hospital,” Bethany replied tiredly, her voice hoarse.
The man on the other end of the line paused for a moment. "Wait for me there."
"What! No!" Bethany instinctively refused. "You really don't need to come."
But before she could finish her sentence, he hung up on her.
Bethany rubbed her aching temples. She truly didn't want to trouble Jonathan. After all, he not only paid for her mother's medical expenses but also propelled her career. If things went on Like this, how could she ever repay him?
Upon inquiring with the hospital's security department, she was informed that the supposed janitor wasn't actually a member of the hospital staff; someone had stolen a uniform to slip into her mother's ward unnoticed.
Bethany's expression darkened. Just as she turned around to return to the ward, she bumped into Jonathan, who was standing behind her.
Somehow, the man towering over her gave Bethany an inexplicable sense of security.
After getting a brief understanding of the situation, Jonathan wasted no time. He called the hospital director over and demanded he investigate the matter thoroughly.
The director nodded and bowed profusely, promising there would be no such lapses in security from now on.
Since it involved patient safety, the hospital involved the police.
Bethany was going to join them in heading to the police station, but Jonathan stopped her. "Let's eat first."
"How can I? I'm not in the mood to eat." Naturally, Bethany was worried that her father's mistress would stir up more trouble for her mother if she left. Since this attempt failed, she was sure there'd be another attempt.
“Don't you have stomach problems?" Jonathan took her hand firmly.
“Who'll look after your mother if you get sick?"
Surprised, Bethany asked, “How'd you know about that?"
"I saw stomach medicine in your Luggage," he explained, giving her a reproachful look. "Your ex-boyfriend really didn't take good care of you, did he?"
Bethany smiled awkwardly, having no choice but to compromise.
Jonathan took her to a nearby restaurant. After eating, the two headed to the station to help with the police investigation.
