"It's been a while since I last drank. Seems like my tolerance has really dropped."

"I can see that! Hey, want to hear who I bumped into last night?"

"Just say it," Jonathan urged, impatient with guessing games.

"I ran into Bethany! She and Jayson were entering a hotel together. I saw it all with my own eyes. They seemed really close!"

The moment Bethany's name was mentioned, Jonathan seemed to silence himself instinctively.

Nikolas wore a sullen expression. "You don't believe me, do you? To prove it, I took photos of them! I'll send them to you right now!"

“There's no need," Jonathan finally responded. "They've always been close; entering a hotel is hardly unusual."

Brody remained quiet.

“Anything else?"

The sudden tranquility and control in Jonathan's voice caught Nikolas off guard.

He had expected Jonathan to rush off in search of her, but perhaps he didn't want to witness that scene after all.

"No, nothing," Nikolas answered.

"There's a meeting soon. Don't be late," Jonathan advised before ending the call.

Nikolas clicked his tongue in annoyance and flung his phone aside.

Upon arriving at the company, Nikolas noticed Maddie engaged in a discussion with some department staff.

He tried to ignore her, but Maddie wasn't about to let him slip by unnoticed.

“Hold on!" she called out.

Caught, Nikolas had no choice but to stop. “What's going on?"

"There's definitely something! I need to discuss that child with you,"

Maddie blurted out, taking Nikolas by surprise.

He crossed his arms and faced her. "I haven't discovered anything yet. Do you have any leads?"

Maddie's frown deepened slightly. “Where would I get any leads? I'm just worried. Jonathan's parents are concerned about it. We can't just ignore it."

“Jonathan's parents are concerned because you told them, right?"

Nikolas knew well enough; only Maddie would have talked to them.
