Chapter: 579
It was clear that Kai doubted Maddie's explanation.

Kai was ready to give Maddie a chance if she came clean.

But if she kept hiding the truth, the car accident might be connected to her.

"Mr. Bennett, don't you believe me?"

"Should I believe you?" Kai's eyes locked onto Maddie's, unforgiving.

“Maddie, you've spun too many lies. Do you remember what you said before? When my son ended up in the hospital, you got down on your knees and admitted you fought with him because of Jonathan. He left the company in a rage. Now, you're saying it was about work?"

He had spent decades in the business world; he wasn't easily fooled.

He found it impossible to trust anything Maddie said.

Back then, he didn't confront her. He wanted to keep things calm, planning to bring it up when she least expected it.

If Maddie repeated what she'd said before, he might trust her. If not, she'd be the main suspect.

Kai had never involved himself with Maddie's family. But if she meant harm to his son, he wouldn't let her off the hook.

“Well, we started arguing about work. Then Jonathan came up." Maddie, anxious and distracted lately, fumbled over her words.

Back when Nikolas had been rushed to the hospital, Maddie wanted to clear her name quickly. Her urgency, however, only deepened Kai's suspicion.

"You don't need to justify yourself. The truth will reveal itself in time. If you're innocent, there's no need for concern." Kai took a step back and extended his hand. “As you can see, I have my hands full. I can't entertain you. Please, go back. Once my son is awake, I'll have him contact you."

Given his dismissal, Maddie had no choice but to leave.

She placed the gifts down and said, "I'll come back when I can."

“No, thanks. Until my son wakes up, you won't be able to see him."

"But"

"Take care. I won't see you off," Kai interrupted Maddie. "Take these things back. I don't want any of it."

Rejected so bluntly, Maddie felt embarrassed.

But she didn't have time to worry about that now. If Nikolas really woke up, her secret would be revealed.

Leaving the hospital, she hurried to her car and quickly called the person who had caused the car accident on her orders.

"Didn't you promise me that Nikolas would die in the car accident? But now, he may wake up."

"Yeah, I didn't see that coming. How about I head over to the hospital and try again?"
