Chapter: 58
Maddie was momentarily taken aback, then smiled. "We're discussing work now."

"So am I," Bethany replied nonchalantly.

"Oh, that's good. I was worried you might've misunderstood something."

With that, Maddie resumed discussing the contract.

It had to be said, Maddie was truly outstanding in the legal profession. When Aimee first mentioned her, Bethany had secretly looked up Maddie's resume.

It turned out Maddie had been involved in several major cases for Bates Group abroad, making significant breakthroughs for the company.

No wonder Jonathan liked her.

"You and Jonathan were classmates?" Maddie suddenly asked, interrupting Bethany's thoughts.

“Huh? Oh, yes, we were."

"You went to the same junior high school, right? Jonathan once told me he had a seatmate who often skipped classes to work part-time jobs."

Maddie's tone was casual, as though she was speaking with an old chum, but every word reminded Bethany of the insurmountable gap between her and Jonathan.

And to make things worse, Maddie never pressured Bethany to respond, instead flowing seamlessly from one topic to the next.

Sometimes, this made Bethany feel overly sensitive.

At last, they finished ironing out the nitty-gritty details of the contract.

Bethany exhaled in relief and stood up, eager to stretch her legs.

"Thank you for all your help. I'll be leaving now."

“Hey, what's the rush? Jonathan should be awake by now. I'll call him, and the three of us can have lunch together."

Bethany paused, puzzled by Maddie's comment. What did she mean by “Jonathan should be awake?"

Seeing the confusion on Bethany's face, Maddie quickly clarified, "I don't know what he did last night, but he looked like he hadn't slept a wink. I asked him about it, but he said he was fine. After two back-to-back meetings this morning, I figured he needed a nap."

Bethany found it unsurprising that Jonathan kept his night activities a secret from Maddie. He couldn't possibly tell the woman he loved that he spent the night with someone else-someone who was just a substitute.

“I'm afraid I can't join you for lunch. I have other matters to attend to. Thanks again for the invitation, though."

She turned to leave.

But Maddie stopped her again, her high heels clicking against the floor as she rushed over.

“Wait a sec, Bethany. I need to tell you something. Just a heads-up, no offense meant."
