Chapter: 599
They were outside the Bates Group building, a place where Jonathan exerted considerable influence.

Although Jayson was boiling with anger, he had no choice but to walk back to the car.

Yet he didn't drive away. The car stayed right where it was.

Once she saw that Jayson had returned to the car, Bethany faced Jonathan with a frown.

“What do you want from me? You're harassing me."

“Then go ahead, call the police and have me arrested," Jonathan said, his lips still bleeding from Bethany's bite. Despite his elegant suit, he appeared wild and untamed.

Bethany was at a loss for words. How could he manage a smile under these circumstances? "Do you really think I won't do it?"

“No, you won't," Jonathan said, his intense gaze fixed on her face.

Bethany felt confused and powerless in response to such irrational behavior. Finally, she tried something she hoped would do the job.

After all, it had worked earlier in the day to get rid of him. "Do you think I would feel sorry for you? I told Jayson to leave because I was worried he'd get hurt."

"Why didn't you Let Jayson keep going if you didn't feel sorry for me?" Jonathan cut her off, moving closer. "Bethany, you couldn't even bring yourself to bite me again!"

Bethany's expression stiffened, her secret now obvious. "I..."

"Bethany," Jonathan continued, stepping closer and cornering her. He forced her to look at him. "Tell me, what happened that year? I need to know the truth."

Bethany didn't want to face him, aware she couldn't hide her feelings from him.

But Jonathan took hold of her chin, insisting she look at him.

"Bethany, tell me. Whatever it is, we'll face it together."

He had made such promises before.

Bethany's mind inadvertently drifted back to the last time she'd heard Jonathan say something similar. It was when Marie was still alive and in the hospital, pestering Bethany to introduce her husband.

His tone back then mirrored the tenderness he displayed now-gentle, passionate, as if he wished to envelop her in his love.

Back then, she had doubted his sincerity.

This time, she couldn't bring herself to believe he'd sacrifice his family for her.

"Jonathan, just stay out of this. You won't want to know the truth anyway."

"Oh, but I do want to know." Jonathan cupped her face delicately, as if she were the most precious thing in the world. His eyes were unwavering, filled with determination. "Bethany, talk to me. Please."

He longed for her to stop pushing him away, to cease his solitary investigations. He yearned to be her rock, to have her confide in him-her grievances, frustrations, and anger-so they could face everything together.
