Chapter: 827
Bethany nodded in agreement. "Okay."
As Nikolas, cradling Rowan, turned to leave, Jonathan followed but noticed Bethany lagging behind.
Aimee had pulled her aside.
“Bethany, you go on ahead. I'm not joining you."
“Why not?"
"I'd rather avoid Nikolas. He's been a real jerk," Aimee said, irritation clear in her voice. She was still fuming over the need to replace her phone, and the thought of Nikolas only added to her frustration.
Had she known he'd be there, she might have stayed away.
Bethany glanced over at Nikolas, still holding Rowan, her expression one of mild shock. "What did he do this time?"
“Let's not even start. I'm not in the mood to discuss him!" Aimee said, rolling her eyes with dramatic flair.
“Aimee, Jonathan and I have just arrived. We should at least have a meal together. It wouldn't look good for you to leave in the middle of it. Can you bear with it for a bit longer?"
Given Bethany's heartfelt plea, Aimee could only concede with a reluctant nod. "Fine."
"Don't worry, I've got your back. I won't let Nikolas push you around. If he steps out of line, I'll be right there to stand up for you."
Aimee opened her mouth, on the verge of mentioning the ruined phone, but thought better of it.
The day was too bright, too filled with joy to be marred by old grievances.
Nikolas was behind the wheel of a roomy MPV. He had already tallied the passengers. If he had chosen a five-seater, there would be no room left for Aimee.
As he settled behind the wheel, Jonathan tapped on the window, curiosity painted across his face. “What's going on between you and Aimee?"
Aimee had insisted on a private chat with Bethany.
Though Jonathan hadn't caught the conversation, he could sense it revolved around Nikolas.
“Nothing much. She was going on a blind date. I was just mad about it."
"You two aren't an item. Why let it get under your skin?"
Nikolas arched an eyebrow and countered, "Am I your friend or not? Are you really that scared of upsetting Bethany?"
“Yes, I am," Jonathan admitted.
Nikolas was momentarily lost for words. His friend was a lost cause.
Moments later, Bethany and Aimee joined the car. The ladies claimed the back seats while the children nestled into the middle row.
