Chapter: 1484
"It is such a shame that you doubt my ability." Hector didn't want to relent.
No one said a word for a few seconds. Then Jenna walked up to Joey, bent down and patted him on the head.
"Good boy, what's your name?"
"My name is Joey Bennet," the child replied sweetly.
"Joey Bennet? You adopted your mother's surname, didn't you? It's beautiful, by the way." Jenna spoke in an amiable tone.
"Okay, everyone, don't stand here. Let us go inside and have a seat."
The others nodded and walked into the house in unison.
Victor and Joey went into the house hand in hand. Jenna was right behind them. The little boy couldn't help thinking about what she just said.
Joey kept staring at the man holding his hand until their eyes met.
Victor lowered his head and asked, “Is anything the matter?"
“Uh... Nothing." Joey quickly switched his gaze towards another direction.
Despite the child's answer, Victor's eyes were fixed on the top of his head as well as his every move. This went on for a while until he sat on the sofa in the living room.
Not long after, the servant served them some coffee. While she was returning to the kitchen, Jenna followed her. She helped in cutting fruits and bringing them out.
When Joey noticed that Jenna and the servant were busy, he looked around the room. He soon sighted a family photo on the TV cabinet.
In the picture, Hector and Jenna sat on a two-seater sofa. Three children were sitting in front of them, a girl and two boys. There were two couples standing right behind them.
Hector's family ought to be larger than it seemed to be. But now, only the couple and a servant lived here. The house looked a little cold and cheerless.
Meanwhile, the last thing Carson wanted was to hear Hector talking about some recent criminal case being investigated. He just wasn't in the mood for such stories. So while texting his colleague, he yawned and noticed Joey's gaze from the corner of his eye.
"The couple on the left are abroad. The other couple are in the south of the country. They come back once in a blue moon." Carson raised his eyebrows and initiated a conversation with the boy.
In response to what he said, Joey turned to look at him.
"The couple on the left live in different countries." Carson sat upright. He finally found something interesting to talk about.
“One of them is a diplomat while the other is an interpreter. They barely have enough time to see each other, let alone come back to Apliaria.
And as for the couple on the right, although the two of them are together, they live kilometers away from here. If they want to come back, it is expected of them to seek approval for that beforehand.
In other words, they would certainly go through a lot of examinations and tiring formalities. Given that they don't even go on vacation, it is almost impossible for them to spare enough time to come back home.
So that's the reason why it is cold and empty here."
Joey paid rapt attention to everything Carson said. He drank two mouthfuls of milk and kept quiet.
