Chapter: 1546
"How could it be?" she muttered to herself as she stared at the word written in the notebook.
"Miss Bennet, are you alright?" the doctor asked worriedly when he saw Rachel's pale face.
Rachel closed her eyes tightly.
Van.
Victor.
It never occurred to her that they might be the same person.
Rachel recalled seeing a picture of Victor when he was fourteen, but it was not until now that she realized that the young man in the photo was actually Van.
She had thought Van was dead.
Rachel swallowed hard.
She opened her eyes again and examined the photo. What a coincidence!
As it turned out, they had known each other for more than ten years.
"Miss Bennet..."
"Victor... How did he survive at that time?" Rachel asked in a hoarse voice.
“He barely escaped death. When he was found at that time, he was still alive, but barely. Fortunately, his body and his resolve were both sturdy. He was revived from the brink of death more than a dozen times before his condition finally stabilized."
As he remembered what had happened, the doctor could not help but sigh.
"Among my many patients, he was by far the toughest. Three of his ribs were fractured, and his kidney was injured and bleeding profusely. Additionally, his stomach was in pretty bad shape due to him eating raw meat from the wild. It gave him gastritis and an infection."
Raw meat.. Rachel's eyes widened. She was the one who roasted that meat. At that time, Van devoured all of it and even said it was delicious.
It turned out that he had stomach problems because of her.
"His wounds were too horrific to look at, but I still treated him because he was determined to survive. After he recovered, I often heard the name Shelia from him." The doctor sighed again.
"Unfortunately, she's dead."
Rachel averted her gaze, making it hard to guess what was going through her head.
After Victor's funeral, his body was taken to be cremated.
Rachel could only make out a blurry figure of a person lying on an iron bed behind the thick glass.
Then, the two workers dressed in dustproof clothing pushed his body into the cremator.
During the whole process, Rachel watched everything unblinkingly through the glass.
