Chapter: 1614
Rachel observed Roger, who maintained a smile, but it didn't reach his eyes. She could be mistaken, but his eyes appeared slightly reddened.
After an extended silence, she averted her gaze and responded,
“Alright.”
Roger's smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly composed himself and regained his usual demeanor. He lowered his eyes and asked,
"Don't you ask why?"
“\hy?" Rachel inquired.
Admittedly, Rachel hadn't anticipated Roger's desire to cancel the engagement. She was initially shocked upon hearing it, but relief soon followed. It would be a lie if she said she wasn't bothered at all. But she experienced a sense of relief as if a burdensome load had been removed from her shoulders.
Roger loved her, but her feelings for him extended no further than friendship, preventing her from reciprocating his affection. Because of this, she carried a sense of wrongdoing that weighed heavily on her heart.
She might have been able to endure it for now, but what if the situation persisted?
An inevitable breaking point loomed. How would it all unfold then?
Rachel had pondered on this question extensively but never arrived at an answer, so she kept her thoughts to herself.
“Rachel, you are really..." Roger wasn't a fool. He recognized that
Rachel's inquiry stemmed solely from his prompting. He felt a mix of helplessness and bitterness, but her reaction didn't surprise him.
Rachel raised her gaze to meet his, but remained silent.
"To put it formally, Jimenez Group is currently under threat from
Sullivan Group. I must devote the majority of my time and energy to
Jimenez Group. I can't look after you or focus on our relationship."
Pausing briefly, Roger continued, “On a more selfish note, it's because I'm jealous."
"You're jealous? Why?"
"Rachel, don't you feel it too?" Roger cast her a glance and spoke in his usual gentle manner.
Rachel pressed her lips together, not comprehending.
“Since the funeral, you've become quieter. Although you seem Like your usual self, you might not notice that every time I call you, you become lost in thought whenever the Sullivan family is mentioned.
Even though you never said it, I can sense the emptiness within you when we're together."
Rachel's eyelashes quivered, and her gaze settled on the cup.
"I used to believe that if you took a single step forward, I could take the remaining ninety-nine steps toward you. But I suddenly realized how difficult that was." Roger's smile was tinged with sadness.
