Chapter: 1942

Maya's eyes fluttered open to unfamiliar surroundings. She noticed Rosa, exhausted, asleep beside her, gripping her hand.

Feeling a tingling in her fingers, Maya stirred slightly.

Rosa, vigilant and light-sleeper, sensed Maya's movement and quickly awoke. “Maya, you're awake.”

"Mommy." Maya's voice was raspy. "Where are we?"

With a gentle smile, Rosa tucked Maya's hair and explained, "Don't you remember? You had cake last night, then suddenly you had trouble breathing and passed out."
