Because Averie was so young, Cathy was worried she might get sick again if no one was around to take care of her, so she asked to let Averie stay with her for a while.

Cathy's place wasn't fancy, just a small one-bedroom apartment but it felt warm and welcoming.

As Cathy set up a little bed for Averie, she said, "I work a lot, so I'm not here much. But you can use anything you need. I've got a deal with the restaurant downstairs, so you can eat there when I'm not around. I pay them at the end of the month."

Averie just stood at the door, clutching her backpack, listening quietly to what Cathy was saying.
