Once they were alone again, Kalyn fixed her gaze intently on Michael, a mix of innocence and slyness in her voice. "I don't like being in this position either, but unfortunately, someone has to be the scapegoat."

Michael returned her gaze silently, fully aware of whom she implied as the scapegoat-the vice manager of their department. It was not impossible to solve the problem of deficit of investment, but the vice manager was possessed by greed. He was taken away by Kalyn and gone missing.

It wasn't Michael's first brush with such grim matters. He was quite accustomed to them. When the former vice manager had vanished, presumably at the hands of Kalyn, it was widely assumed he'd met his end.

“Had we not handled it promptly, the consequences could have been severe." Kalyn diverted her gaze, examining her fingers painted with a dark red polish, vivid as fresh blood.

She extended her hand towards Michael, seeking his attention. "Do you like my new manicure?"
