"Okay. I get it." Rachel momentarily recoiled at the mention of the word “boyfriend.” She dropped her gaze, gave a small nod, and watched as the nurse exited the room.

Standing next to her, Alberto couldn't help but feel a flicker of relief when she didn't challenge the term. Yet, his gaze quickly turned somber as he noted the bandages wrapping her hand.

In the next moment, he gently clasped Rachel's injured hand, his voice barely above a whisper. “Does it hurt?"

Alberto instantly regretted his words, inwardly berating himself for asking such a needless question.

Rachel glanced up, noticing the mingled pain and guilt etched across Alberto's face. She squeezed his hand reassuringly with her good one and murmured, "It's alright. It's not too painful."
