Chapter: 140
She peered through the peephole and spotted the chef standing outside.
"What do you want?" Kaitlin asked, her voice muffled by the door.
“Mrs. Hewitt, I've brought you some hot chicken broth," the chef replied, his tone urgent. "Please open the door quickly; it's getting heavy."
Kaitlin had always appreciated the chef for his culinary skills, which fostered a friendly rapport between them.
With a sigh of resignation, she opened the door.
"Come in," she invited.
As the chef stepped inside, Kaitlin reached to close the door, but a hand suddenly prevented it from shutting.
"Kaitlin, it's me," Alan announced, his voice quick, hoping to keep her calm.
“What are you doing here?" Kaitlin asked with a frown, still pushing against the door.
“Look, you missed meeting the client. How about we catch up over dinner instead?" Alan suggested, giving the chef a meaningful glance.
The chef nodded in understanding. "Mrs. Hewitt, if you could just wait here. I'll prepare a delicious meal. It might be best to keep the door open, so I can easily bring in the dishes once they're ready, okay?"
Kaitlin, faced with the chef's grin, found it difficult to protest.
Never mind. It was just a meal.
"Fine, go ahead," she conceded.
"Understood!" the chef responded enthusiastically.
Alan's unease melted into delight as he followed her inside. "Kaitlin, have you been feeling tired lately?"
He softly placed his large hand on her waist for support.
Kaitlin let him as she felt quite exhausted.
“Alan, my issues are none of your business."
“Kaitlin, I've explained. It was all a big misunderstanding. If you still don't trust me, I'll swear on it. If I'm lying, let lightning strike me—"
He was cut off mid-sentence as Kaitlin quickly clamped a hand over his mouth.
“Who curses themselves like that?!" she exclaimed, glaring at him before releasing her grip.
Alan grinned and gently took her hand. “I knew you'd come around. Kaitlin, after everything we've been through, can you try not to jump to conclusions so quickly?"
Kaitlin felt her resolve soften.
