Chapter: 142
“You can handle your business if you need to. I can make my way back alone," she said.
Alan took her hand, ending his phone call. "I'll drive you home," he offered.
Kaitlin gave a small nod. Once they were settled in the car, curiosity got the better of her.
"Was that Ashley?"
It wasn't a stretch to assume she had overheard, given how close Alan was to her when he talked to Ashley on the phone.
“Yes, she had an accident at the project site and got injured," he explained.
Kaitlin then probed further, “Oh, are you planning to visit her at the hospital?"
Alan hesitated, which prompted her next suggestion.
“If you're going, maybe I could join you?" she proposed, intrigued about the situation surrounding Ashley.
“Kaitlin, you're not upset, are you?" Alan's voice carried a hint of concern.
"Why would I be upset? Do you think I'm that petty?" she retorted, casting a pointed glance his way before instructing the driver to detour to the hospital.
Upon arriving, Alan was attentive, assisting Kaitlin as they navigated the hospital corridors.
In Ashley's room, they found her with her leg in a cast-a clear sign the injury was significant.
Ashley's face brightened when she saw Alan. "Alan, you made it."
Her smile waned slightly when she noticed Kaitlin. “Kaitlin, you're here too. Sorry to drag you both into this."
Kaitlin eyed Ashley skeptically. Despite the severe cast, Ashley appeared remarkably composed, which raised Kaitlin's suspicions.
Nonetheless, she remained silent, offering only a measured look.
"Alan, the project manager's outside in the hallway," Ashley informed, diverting his attention.
Alan nodded, supporting Kaitlin to a nearby chair.
“Wait for me a second. I'll find out what's going on," Alan said to Kaitlin.
Accidents at construction sites were always serious.
Determining the cause was essential to prevent future occurrences.
Kaitlin, who had spent her morning at the hospital for a check-up, felt exhausted and took a seat.
She caught Ashley's gaze. The woman was staring right back at her.
