Chapter: 162
“Put Kaitlin on the phone. I need to speak with her right away,"
Alan continued.
Hesitant, Phoebe almost ended the call but noticing Kaitlin's anxious look, she passed the phone over instead.
"What's going on?" Kaitlin's face became progressively more solemn with each word she absorbed. After a brief pause, she gave a nod and ended the call.
Phoebe, still visibly upset, caught sight of her friend's distress and couldn't contain her anger. “He's asking you to come back, isn't he?"
Kaitlin confirmed with a nod. "Beth suddenly fell severely ill. It's unrelated to you, but the doctor mentioned it's critical. Perhaps she won't make it through. I have to see her."
Phoebe rolled her eyes but held back her objections.
The serious illness of an elderly person was indeed a significant concern. “Kaitlin, I apologize for taking your call without asking."
Kaitlin exhaled a weary sigh. “Phoebe, your intentions were good; I don't hold it against you. Don't worry about it. Beth's condition isn't caused by mere words. It's likely been developing for quite some time."
This reassured Phoebe somewhat.
Kaitlin made her way to the Hewitt family's residence. She felt obligated to visit Beth, even if just for show.
Upon her arrival, the mansion was unsettlingly silent. The butler, with a heavy sigh, shared the events of the previous day.
"Mrs. Hewitt's health has been deteriorating for some time now. She's been on medication and receiving treatments, but to no avail. Last night, her condition worsened, probably due to acute stress."
Kaitlin had her suspicions that it might be a ploy.
However, the butler's words lent some credence to the severity of the situation.
A doctor descended the stairs, his face etched with concern.
"Mr. Hewitt, your grandma's worsening state is the resurgence of a longstanding illness. Her advanced age has compromised her immune system. It's possible she's been suffering quietly for a while, and you may not have noticed. Her fever has decreased for the moment, but she's still delirious. Her situation appears quite dire.”
Alan was taken aback by the rapid turn of events.
Just a day earlier, Beth had seemed alright.
“If we can stabilize her, she'll respond better to treatment."
Alan's brow furrowed. Her concern was centered around his uncle. “Are you certain you're telling the truth?"
The doctor recoiled, surprise etched on his face. "Mr. Hewitt, what are you suggesting? How could I possibly fabricate something of this gravity? If my credibility is in doubt, feel free to consult additional doctors for a second opinion. Should their findings contradict mine, I will not set foot in this place again.”
Alan remained silent, dismissing the doctor shortly thereafter. He then called upon two more trusted doctors to reassess the situation.
As Kaitlin observed him orchestrating these consultations, she began piecing together the truth.
