Chapter: 161
Kaitlin nodded, accepted the pajamas, and headed to the bathroom for her shower.
Meanwhile, the phone continued to ring incessantly. Phoebe glanced at it, taken aback by Beth's relentless attempts.
While Kaitlin might hold some regard for Beth, Phoebe had none for anyone in the Hewitt family.
She carried the phone out to the balcony, carefully shutting the door to keep Kaitlin from hearing.
“Who is this? It's so late. This is really annoying."
The caller hesitated, striving to stay courteous. “Is Kaitlin there?"
“Who? Sorry, you must have the wrong number."
“No, this is my granddaughter-in-law's phone. Put her on, please!"
Beth's tone was imperious and demanding, which grated on Phoebe.
“Granddaughter-in-law? You're mistaken. Wrong number."
With that, Phoebe ended the call and grinned, imagining Beth seething with frustration.
"That'll teach her." Phoebe returned indoors just as Kaitlin came out, toweling off her hair. “That was quick."
"I get lightheaded if I stand too long. Why were you out on the balcony?" Kaitlin's eyes immediately fell on her phone in Phoebe's hand. “Did you take my call?"
"What's the fuss all about? Remember how terribly that old woman treated you? Do you really want to go back and see her?" Phoebe rolled her eyes as she set the phone back on the sofa. "Calm down. I hardly said anything-just told her she had the wrong number. It's common for elderly people to make a dialing mistake."
Kaitlin exhaled deeply. “She has my number saved. She wouldn't just dial it wrong."
Phoebe scoffed in response, "I can't bear to watch the Hewitt family push you around anymore. And despite Ashley stirring up trouble, you're still holding back? Kaitlin, what's going through your mind?"
Kaitlin, accustomed to Phoebe's straightforwardness, felt a bit foolish about her decision to check things out at Alan's place herself. “Alright, let's just go to sleep."
She finished drying her hair and climbed under the covers, overwhelmed with exhaustion and unwilling to engage further.
As the predawn darkness lingered, Phoebe's phone erupted with a shrill ring, rousing them from their sleep.
Groggy and irritated, Phoebe cursed under her breath before snatching the phone. The screen displayed an unknown number.
Bracing for a confrontation in case it was a prank, she answered sharply. "Who's this? What's wrong with you?"
After a tense pause, a chilling, unmistakable voice came through. "My grandmother is sick."
Phoebe froze for a moment as she recognized Alan's voice.
Kaitlin, jolted awake by the news, perked up immediately.
