Chapter: 1137
“I know you handle everything well for the kids, but they need their father. When you're sick, you can't play with them."
Jonathan fell silent once more. After a while, he responded, “Alright.”
“Good, then. Make sure you visit a doctor."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Bethany let out a sigh of relief.
Speaking to Jonathan on the phone required her to carefully consider her words.
Being divorced meant they couldn't be as casual and open with each other as before.
Jonathan was on his way to the technology drinking party in Ferindel.
He stared at the dark phone screen for a long while.
As they neared their destination, Jonathan slowly raised his eyes to Brody, who was driving.
“What did you tell Bethany?"
Brody was taken aback. "Nothing!"
Jonathan lowered his gaze and said, "Don't tell her something Like this again."
Brody clutched the steering wheel, lost in thought, trying to figure out how Jonathan could possibly have known.
"Mr. Bates, I..."
"You're wondering how I figured out you were the one who told Bethany."
"Yes," Brody answered truthfully.
A trace of bitterness flickered across Jonathan's face, difficult to hide.
"She wouldn't have called just to ask about the kids."
Given Bethany's character, she wouldn't reach out to him, regardless of the seriousness of the situation.
Jonathan didn't want to get to know Bethany too well because it allowed him to fool himself into believing she genuinely cared about him and couldn't move on.
But what was he supposed to do?
Deceiving himself was the hardest thing to do.
"Ms. Holt still cares about you!" said Brody.
