Chapter: 1136
Her phone continued to ring. Bethany promptly picked it up.

“Hello, Jonathan..."

“Is someone bothering you?" Jonathan's voice was clearly weak and raspy, yet it still carried an authoritative tone.

"No." Bethany was puzzled by Jonathan's assumption. "No one at Bates Group would dare trouble me! I was just... I just wanted to ask about Rowan and Nola."

Jonathan was silent for seconds. He then said, “I know what just happened at the company.”

“What ?"

“You had a fight with someone."

“How did you find out?" Bethany asked, surprised.

"I called you but didn't get an answer, so I had someone check the security footage."

As expected, she had no privacy in Jonathan's territory. “It's fine. It was just a minor disagreement with a colleague. She has already apologized to me!"

But Jonathan was still displeased. "That woman won't be around at work anymore."

“Don't do that! She just came to my office and apologized! Don't fire her, Jonathan, or it'll make me look bad."

She had assured Kiley that she was forgiven. If Kiley were fired now, people might think she had complained to Jonathan about her.

"She's just an assistant. Bates Group isn't short on assistants."

"But I'm only going to be at Bates Group for another six months. I don't want to stir up any trouble."

Then they both fell silent.

After a long pause, Bethany broke the silence. "Jonathan, are you ill?"

"No."

“You're lying. I can hear it in your voice. You're sick!"

After a moment, Jonathan said, "It's just that I've had too many meetings. My throat is sore now."

Bethany realized that Jonathan just didn't want to appear weak.

He avoided her calls because he feared she would detect something amiss in his voice.

“Jonathan, you should see a doctor if you're sick. I'm not there, and you need to look after Rowan and Nola."

“Don't worry. They're fine."
