Chapter: 1167
"Uh, actually, it wasn't Brody who said that. I just surmised it myself. He merely asked me about my flower preferences, and I impulsively assumed you were using that as a pretext to send me flowers, so..."
Bethany felt compelled to cover for Brody.
But she struggled to continue, feeling a warm flush on her cheeks.
Jonathan remained silent for a moment. Just as Bethany feared he might have disconnected, he finally spoke.
"You weren't wrong. Don't overthink it."
"Okay. I won't overthink it any longer."
There was a brief pause.
"I have to get to work now. Goodbye." Bethany hesitated before adding, "Mr. Bates."
After hanging up, she exhaled deeply, grabbed her laptop and bag, and hurried out of her apartment.
On her way to work, she picked up some pastries and placed them on Kiley's desk upon reaching the project department.
Bethany disliked the feeling of being indebted to anyone or having anyone indebted to her.
As she settled into her office, she looked up to see a security guard approaching with a concerned expression, holding a bouquet of roses. “Bethany Holt from the project department, right? This is for you."
The bouquet was so sizable that the guard needed both hands to manage it.
Bethany's first thought was of Jonathan.
She had, however, explicitly told him not to send flowers.
With caution, she asked, "Do you know who sent these?"
"No. You might want to ask around yourself."
The flowers proved too cumbersome, prompting the security guard to set them on the floor before departing.
Bethany rose and delved into the bouquet of roses, searching in vain for a card or any sign of the sender.
This posed quite the mystery.
Since Kiley was yet to arrive, they could not be from her. The only recent mention of flowers had involved Jonathan. Could he have disregarded her request?
Bethany toyed with the idea of calling him, but it was late at night in Ferindel.
Perhaps Jonathan would reveal himself as the sender in the morning, or she could inquire with Brody.
Summoning all her strength, Bethany moved the flowers aside.
