Chapter: 133
"I saw you transferred the car development project to me. Do you have any issues with Mr. Bates?" Brody approached her as soon as he saw her.
Bethany shook her head. “At yesterday's meeting, Mr. Bates mentioned I was too subjective and couldn't view the project impartially. It should be been handed over to someone else. Otherwise, if the company incurred losses because of me, I would be blamed."
Brody chuckled at Bethany's remark. “You shouldn't think that way. Mr. Bates is quite fair. I've been working with him for years and have never seen him act unfairly. His decisions are always well-considered."
Every decision?
Bethany wondered if that included the peculiar contract they had signed.
"Don't worry. I hold no grudge. I'm thankful for the opportunity to work at headquarters."
"That's reassuring. I was concerned you might feel resentful towards Mr. Bates, since you don't know him well. And don't worry. Since you introduced this project, if it succeeds, you'll definitely be credited for its success."
"You don't need to explain. I get it."
Brody nodded and offered a reassuring smile. “Alright, go on with your tasks. I'll handle this project. And I'll ensure our discussions with the other party go smoothly."
Bethany nodded in agreement and returned to her desk.
Beep!
Bethany's phone chimed with a new message.
She picked it up and opened it quickly.
Again, it wasn't him.
The message was from Marie. “You and Jayson need to be here for my surgery this weekend!"
Bethany frowned and replied, "Mom, he's very busy."
"Enough with the excuses! I just called him. He told me he's free this weekend."
Bethany was taken aback that her mother had contacted Jayson behind her back.
Bethany's eyebrows drew together in frustration, and intense anger flared within her, nearly overwhelming.
The feeling of being manipulated and coerced deeply irritated her.
“Why didn't you tell me you were going to call him? I've already mentioned that he's very busy. You called him, and he felt obliged to agree," Bethany said sharply to her mother.
"Are you criticizing me?" Marie retorted. "I did this for your benefit! You obtained the marriage certificate without even informing me first. I haven't lost my temper over it yet, but now you're blaming me! ALL I want is for him to be more involved in your life and spend more time with you. Why does that upset you?"
Bethany ended the call abruptly.
Her mother always claimed she was acting for her benefit.
