Chapter: 134
But was it genuinely for her good if she herself didn't see it that way?

Bethany tried to steady her emotions, reminding herself that her mother's upcoming surgery was what truly mattered.

After collecting her thoughts, she dialed Jayson's number.

His warm voice soon came through. "I was just about to call you. Why did someone named Brody Jensen contact me today?"

"The thing is, because your project is quite significant, our company decided to involve someone with more experience to discuss it with you," Bethany explained.

"I think you're perfectly capable," Jayson said, his tone friendly.

"Thank you for the kind words." Bethany recalled how he had brought her a glass of warm water the previous day. "And thank you so much for yesterday! I was in such a rush for the meeting that I didn't get the chance to thank you properly."

"It's not a big deal." Jayson seemed to have anticipated the reason for her call. He sensed that she wasn't reaching out just to chat about trivial matters. “About your mother's surgery, I promised I'd be there."

Bethany felt a flush of embarrassment. "I'm sorry. I didn't know she would call you without me knowing."

“It's fine. In her eyes, I'm her son-in-law. It's only natural for me to be there for the surgery, right?"

Despite his reassurance, Bethany still felt uncomfortable.

She had assumed that once Jayson had played the role of her husband in front of Marie, that would be the end of it. She hadn't anticipated these complications.

"You really don't need to go to the hospital that day. I can handle all the explanations myself. Besides, everything's arranged, and the surgery is fully paid for. She'll definitely go through with it.”

“Bethany,” Jayson responded casually, “if I'm there, it might ease her concerns and possibly even make her happy. Why not? Besides, I'm free this weekend. I don't have any classes.

"But..."

"You don't need to feel obligated. Just think of me as a friend. It's really not a big deal," Jayson reassured her.

Bethany thought it over for a moment and then decided against it.

"If I start with a lie, I'll need countless more to cover it up. I don't have the energy to sustain the lie I told before. It's better if she learns the truth sooner rather than later."

After a Lengthy silence, Bethany heard Jayson exhale. “Alright. I'll respect your decision. If there's an emergency, just call me."

“Okay, thank you."

After ending the call, Bethany noticed a message from Maddie.

She had been on the phone, so she had only just received it.

“I'm sorry to bother you. Do you know Jonathan's underwear size? I don't want him to be uncomfortable if I choose the wrong size."

To be honest, Bethany was impressed by Maddie.
