Chapter: 142
Jonathan checked his phone for the fifth time.

Still no messages.

Had the items he sent not reached the ward? Or did Bethany simply choose not to contact him?

She was always polite to everyone. It was unlike her not to acknowledge a gift.

Suddenly, his phone rang.

Jonathan answered immediately, hearing Nikolas’ voice instead.

"You picked up so fast. Who are you waiting to hear from?"

"I was just on my phone."

Nikolas seemed ready to roll his eyes on the other end. “Don't pretend I don't know you contacted that assistant again. Didn't we agree to wait and see how long it takes her to call you out of concern?"

"I sent some gifts to her mother."

“And now you're waiting for her to thank you on her own initiative?"

Jonathan's expression darkened. "Is there anything else? I'm busy right now."

"I'm just saying, she's acting like this because she probably isn't into you. Aren't you ready to give up yet?"

"We're already married."

Jonathan was frustrated, but he didn't believe Bethany would end their marriage just because of Jayson.

He was merely upset with her simplicity.

“Only you are taking this marriage seriously," Nikolas said, feeling a pang of sympathy for Maddie. "She's parading a man as her husband back home, and you just let it slide. Maddie was negotiating contracts for you just days after her surgery, clutching her stomach, and you didn't bat an eye. What's wrong with you?"

"I told her she shouldn't have come."

"Stop pretending you don't know how Maddie feels about you!"

"As a married man, it's not my place to acknowledge such things.”

Jonathan's firm reply left Nikolas without words.

After ending the call, Jonathan massaged his temples and instructed his assistant to book him an earlier flight back.

Marie's surgery had gone well. Bethany spent two days at the hospital with her before returning to Aimee's apartment to prepare for a Sunday night business trip.

"You look exhausted. Why not tell your boss to skip this trip?"
