"Did I ever suggest that?" he asked.

No, he hadn't.

But if Jonathan reconciled with Maddie, did he still intend to keep her around as a stand-in?

"So, is there anything else you need to talk about?" Jonathan slid the plate of cut steak toward her and glanced up at her.

"Nothing else."

“Then have some food and rest up. I'm really tired today."

Bethany and Jonathan lay in the bed, with his large hands resting on her waist and his breaths deep and even.

Bethany still couldn't determine if their contract was still in effect.

She wrestled with her thoughts all night until sheer exhaustion swept her into sleep.

When she woke the next morning, the man beside her had already left.

In her pajamas, Bethany stepped out of the bedroom and noticed that Jonathan had left breakfast on the table, seemingly erasing any tension from the day before.

Suddenly, the phone by the bed rang.

She dashed over and saw Aimee's name flashing on the screen.

"Didn't you see the message I sent you yesterday?"

"Well, I was swamped with work yesterday and had lots to handle.”

"I'm asking about the man you mentioned. Is it Mr. Bates?" Aimee was eager for her response.

“No way." Bethany denied it with guilty.

"So it's not Mr. Bates?" Aimee was relieved. "You really had me worried. I thought your silence meant I guessed right. Mr. Bates is truly a catch, known for his virtues, and his ties with Maddie are an open secret. They're expected to marry soon. If you have any hopes for him, I'd advise you to step back before it's too late."

It seemed Aimee also believed Jonathan and Maddie were an item.

"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."

"I'm not saying you don't deserve him. Just remember, Mr. Bates‘ heart is taken. He even said in an interview once that his heart belongs to one woman. I still have that interview because he looked incredibly handsome that day. I'll send it over so you can see for yourself."

“No, thank you," Bethany replied, her lips pressed tightly together.

“Well, it's fine to daydream occasionally, but if you're seriously looking for a relationship, you can consider my cousin."

Aimee seemed determined to match Bethany with Jayson.
