Chapter: 183
Suddenly, Bethany was yanked back into a secure, firm embrace.
She looked up, startled.
It was Jonathan. Why was he here?
"No need to bother you. I'll take her," Jonathan said coldly.
Locking between Bethany and Jonathan, Jayson asked, “Are you Bethany's partner?"
“No, he isn't," Bethany responded swiftly.
The air seemed to hang still for a moment. Jonathan's mouth moved, but no words came out.
Despite wanting to say more, Jayson held back as Jonathan guided Bethany towards his car.
Once they were on the road, Bethany said, "You can drop me off at the next intersection."
"I've instructed the company's audit department to look into this. You don't need to worry. Why don't you take a few days off?"
"The company's investigation is their affair. I need to secure evidence to clear my name." She insisted, unwilling to just wait for a quick and potentially unsatisfactory resolution.
Jonathan's expression hardened, a mix of concern and frustration marking his features. "I spoke with Maddie. She insists she's innocent."
"Of course, she would say that. Do you really think someone guilty would just confess? Maddie isn't foolish," Bethany said, her voice tinged with exasperation as she turned to look out the window, taking a deep breath to compose herself. She didn't want her frustration to misdirect at Jonathan, who had been supportive. "Don't I deserve a chance to prove my innocence?"
"You do, but as of now, all signs point to Maddie being innocent."
“I understand," Bethany said with a strained smile. “I never expected anyone to take my side without proof. I get why you're skeptical. I'm not asking for your help. You don't need to keep stressing these points!"
Why had he come all the way to Ensson Corporation just to tell her the evidence absolved Maddie?
Was he attempting to sway her thinking?
“Bethany, try to stay rational. Don't let your emotions cloud your judgment. We need to focus on the facts."
“I'm not talking about emotions here!" She massaged her temples, feeling overwhelmed. “Can you let me out? I'm not in the right state of mind, and I might end up saying something I'll regret."
Jonathan pulled over but didn't unlock the doors. Turning to face her, he said, “You don't need Jayson to retrieve the messages. I can handle it."
Bethany locked eyes with him, her expression resolute. “Let me reiterate. I will find a way to clear my name. I didn't do this, and I don't need anyone else managing things for me.”
Her concern was that if Jonathan intervened, it might skew the outcome in Maddie's favor.
Jonathan noticed the mistrust in her eyes.
She had always been like this, even back in school-a lone wolf, cautious and reluctant to rely on others.
