Chapter: 186
Nikolas closed the door, approached her desk, and pounded his hand down. "To suspend the chief attorney's duties over an accusation from an assistant is unheard of!"

Maddie smiled and poured him a cup of coffee.

Despite his unrest, she remained calm. “It's fine, I'll see it as an opportunity for a break."

“So was this incident really connected to you?" Nikolas asked cautiously as he accepted the coffee.

Maddie arched an eyebrow. "What do you think?"

“Honestly, I can't see you taking such extreme measures," Nikolas replied. "Yes, Bethany might be a thorn in your side regarding Jonathan, but his parents already see you as their future daughter-in -law. It's only a matter of time before Jonathan settles down and marries you. There's no need for you to frame her."

“Thank you for your trust."

“It's obvious! You and Bethany have no deep-seated grudges. Going to these lengths would be excessive."

If Bethany had indeed been framed, whoever was responsible had not just targeted her. It was an attempt to destroy her career completely.

Such an act would indicate a profound vendetta.

“But Jonathan doesn't see it that way. He takes Bethany's word over mine." Maddie sighed and shrugged. “It's alright. Let the investigation unfold and reveal the truth."

"This situation is unfair to you!" I'll have a word with him.

" Nikolas discontented. was a crush scowled, “Bethany just youthful for him. You've stood by his side for years, making meaningful contributions. He should recognize where his loyalty should lie. Bates Group can survive without Bethany, but losing you would be a real blow."

He was convinced that his friend was under Bethany's spell.

How could someone usually so level-headed now appear utterly lost in emotion?

"Don't go!" Maddie stopped him and shook her head. "Don't speak to him. I don't want him to feel pressured by me."

Nikolas leaned against the doorway, his brow furrowed. “You think keeping a clear conscience is enough, but Bethany might play the pity card. Remember the old saying? Pillow talk is the most dangerous!"

Maddie was amused and waved her hand dismissively. "Jonathan's mother is in the country, and I can use this period of time to rest and keep her company. Don't mess up my plans."

Nikolas scrutinized her, his gaze penetrating as he sighed deeply.

"You're spoiling Jonathan more than needed. When will he realize how good you are?"

Maddie's expression softened, her eyes reflecting a depth of sincerity. "I'm not doing this for his sake. I genuinely like Francine and treat her like my own mother."

Nikolas nodded thoughtfully, then tilted his head, curiosity flickering in his eyes. "By the way, you don't mention your father much. He and your mother must be a loving couple to raise such a kind and gentle daughter, right?"

Maddie's smile wavered, a shadow crossing her face. "Yes, they were very loving." But they were not a couple.

Meanwhile, Jonathan skillfully maneuvered his car into a parking spot in front of a quaint restaurant.
